  Price of diesel vs petrol

To make the advantages of diesel outboards a bit more realistic (to compensate for the higher price of the engine) it is good to also look at the fuel prices.

In Holland a commercial operator can use red EN-590 diesel which costs around € 0,50 p/l and the price of Euro unleaded petrol is around € 1,80 p/l in a marina. This means that the earn back time is very short.

The other advantage is that the diesel engines can be used in harbours and oil terminals where DNR regulations matter (no sparks near oil terminals)

Looking for some help. I’m looking at a boat that has a 1990 200HP Turbo TAMD41 engine with 2,200 hours. It appears to have been well maintained, according to the service records, but I’m not personally familiar with this engine model.

I‘m searching for anyone on here that’s either owned or has some second hand knowledge on the general performance and reliability of these engines and/or if there are certain components that have a tendency to fail, corrosion issues, etc. From my experience Volvo Penta makes good engines, although with so many different models some are like chimneys, some are workhorses, and now they seem to do more with general pleasure use motors. No matter what, the parts are extremely pricey.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I really like the boat but I am just a little skeptical on the engine itself, it's the one unknown. Thanks in advance.

Although the first of its kind, as the most powerful diesel outboard brought to the market, the CXO300 has been developed to be compatible with existing industry standards – making it as easy to install on a wide range of vessels as any gasoline outboard.
