Hi Guys, I am Bruno, owner of Tideman boats in Holland. We have done a few diesel outboards over the last few years on our indestructible HDPE workboats:
Twin Mercury DSI 175pk on a 9m (48 knots), very aggressive acceleration but very bad emissions, usage and lots of maintenance. The spark plugs for ignition get dirty quite quick and need to be replaced every 30 hours..... Only good for military applications when they are being used at WOT constantly.
OXE: We have 2pcs 150's and 5pcs 200's being used in Europe and Africa. These are high tech engines and they need good quality and clean diesel. Exceptional good fuel usage but not yet reliable enough. Can only be used where local support can be given. We have ordered a 300 but that delivery has been delayed now for more than 8 months. Similar weight as the 200 but better engine because they did not change the ECU setting off the BMW powerhead. The lower end with the belt seems to work well, although we saw some oil leaks on the seals.
COX: we ordered a CXO300 6 months ago but have not heard anything back, I hope they get their problems sorted soon. The sales director has left the company and dealers are waiting for info....
Mecachrome/Teos: this French company has been working on a 175hp outboard, but unfortunately the development stopped: http://www.teos-engineering.com/experien...el-engine/
D-Torque 111 distributed bu Yanmar: A good but very expensive package. Only problem they have is the alternator which does not have enough power to charge the batteries...... the 50hp has good fuel economy but lacks power....
Hyundai-Seasall S30-OB: this is their 3.0V6 engine using a V drive and prop shaft in a box which you can mount on the transom. We order one a year ago but they are still testing in Korea. It was presented at METS last year. This heavy package provided additional buoyancy so the nett weight seems to be OK. looking forward to test it!
Anything else? Chinese have some air cooled V-twin engines. rubbish
A nice video to see twin OXE 200 in action on a pilot boat
